Description

Tall, slender and described as a "king of dogs," the Afghan Hound has prominent hip bones, a curled tail, and a long rich silky coat that usually comes in sand with a darker face and ear fringes. This dog is native to Sinai and mentioned in many Egyptian writings as well depicted on Afghanistan cave walls thousands of years ago.

Characteristics

This breed is loyal, sweet, affectionate and sensitive, and must be trained kindly yet firmly. It can be hard to house-train, and can become timid if it does not get enough mental and physical stimulation.

Health problems

They are generally healthy, but like all dogs, they may be prone to certain health concerns such as hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) and cancer. Given the Afghan hound is a large and deep chested breed, they are also at a higher risk of developing bloat (also known as gastric torsion or twisted stomach).

Exercise

Although they're athletic, they can be lazy at times as well. In most cases, Afghan Hounds need 30-60 minutes of walking a day. It's important to note that Afghan Hounds are sighthounds and have a strong prey drive, so they should always be kept on a leash or in a secure area.
Jumping or running on hard surfaces isn't recommended because they have delicate joints and bones.

Grooming

Weekly baths will prevent matting and keep the coat long and shiny. Just make sure extra care is taken to thoroughly dry their coat after a bath to prevent dampness and mold growth.
Despite their long coats, Afghan hounds are consirdered hypoallergenic due to their low shed levels and can be a good choice for people with allergies.

Living conditions

This dog needs a lot of room to run around, and can live indoors or outdoors (but would be happier sleeping indoors).
