Description

Also known as the Catahoula Leopard Dog and Catahoula Cur, the Catahoula has an impressive muscular build and agile body with a merle coat pattern that has an array of colors. This breed has a unique trait called "glass eyes." This means that their eyes can be different colors or even have multiple colors in one eye, giving them a striking and distinctive appearance. The color of their eyes can range from blue to green to brown, making them quite the eye-catcher!
The Catahoula originated in Louisiana, USA, and was named after the Catahoula Parish in that state. Originally bred for hunting and herding livestock, these working dogs have since become a beloved and loyal breed.

Characteristics

These independent and intelligent dogs possess a fierce loyalty to their families and are known to be excellent watchdogs. However, their high prey drive and love for hunting and exploring can make them a challenge to train without proper guidance. Furthermore, if not socialised properly, they may exhibit a reserved or aloof demeanor towards strangers.

Health Problems

While generally healthy, Catahoulas may be susceptible to certain health issues such as hip dysplasia, deafness, and eye problems like progressive retinal atrophy and cataracts.

Exercise

Catahoulas require ample physical exercise and mental stimulation to maintain their wellbeing. They are highly active dogs that need daily walks, runs, and playtime to stay happy and healthy.

Grooming

Their low-maintenance, short coat requires only weekly brushing to keep it in good condition.

Living Environment

These impressive canines thrive in homes with large yards or rural areas where they have ample space to explore and run. Apartment living may not be suitable for them unless they have access to outdoor exercise areas and plenty of mental stimulation.

Did you know...

... Catahoulas are great swimmers and love water. They were originally bred to hunt and herd in the swamps and forests of Louisiana, so they are naturally comfortable in and around water. In fact, they are often used for activities like dock diving and water rescue.
