Small, compact, stock and muscular, the Pekingese has large wide eyes, a short thick neck, a very long course outer coat and a soft thick undercoat.

Characteristics

Sensitive, independent, loving and generally adorable, a Pekingese can make an excellent companion, watchdog and family dog.

Health problems

The Pekingese: small in stature, big in charm – and, sadly, prone to a few health concerns. Their unique appearance, marked by a flat face, luxurious coat, and compact body, contributes to some of these issues.

  • Breathing Troubles: With their adorable, squashed muzzles come some challenges. Brachycephalic syndrome, a condition linked to the breed's facial structure, often leads to respiratory difficulties. Snoring and noisy breathing are common. Avoid overexertion and monitor them in hot weather – and remember, surgery might be needed to alleviate symptoms.
  • Eye Issues: A Pekingese's large, expressive eyes can be vulnerable to various problems, such as dry eye, corneal ulcers, and PRA. Make sure you're keeping up with regular check-ups to maintain their eye health.
  • Back Troubles: That long back and short legs combo? It predisposes the Pekingese to intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), which can lead to spinal disc herniation, pain, and even paralysis. Treatment varies based on severity – medication, rest, or possibly surgery.
  • Skin Sensitivities: The Pekingese's thick double coat and skin folds make them susceptible to skin issues. Allergies, infections, and hot spots are possibilities. Groom them regularly, and pay special attention to cleaning those skin folds.
  • Dental Dilemmas: Crowded teeth in their small jaw can lead to dental issues – tooth decay, gum disease, and tooth loss. Proper dental care is crucial to keep their pearly whites in good shape.

A Pekingese's well-being depends on regular vet check-ups, grooming, exercise, and a balanced diet. Be proactive – give your furry friend the best chance at a long, healthy life.

Exercise

The Pekingese is a low-energy breed that doesn't require a lot of exercise. Short walks or play sessions in a fenced-in area are sufficient to meet their needs. However, it's important to avoid overheating and limit exercise during the hottest parts of the day and summer months.

Grooming

The Pekingese is a small breed of dog that requires regular grooming to keep its coat healthy and looking its best. Regular brushing and combing are necessary to prevent matting and tangling, and to control shedding, as the breed is known to shed quite heavily. The Pekingese may also need bathing using a mild dog-specific shampoo. Dental hygiene is important, and the Pekingese's nails should be trimmed regularly to avoid overgrowth.

Living conditions

The Pekingese is well-suited for apartment living due to their low-energy level and adaptability. They require a comfortable and safe living space, as they are sensitive to extreme temperatures. Overall, they make great pets for those living in smaller spaces.

Did you know...

These dogs were considered sacred in ancient China and only the Chinese imperial family was allowed to own them. They were so highly valued that stealing a Pekingese was punishable by death. Legend has it that when a Pekingese was stolen from the imperial palace, the thieves would disguise the dog by cutting off its mane and tail to avoid detection.
