Description

The Standard Poodle has a distinctive curly, hypoallergenic coat that comes in a variety of solid colors, such as black, white, brown, and grey.
It is believed to have originated in Germany as a water retriever. The breed was developed in France, where it became a popular hunting dog, retriever, and companion among French nobility. The Standard Poodle was also used as a circus performer due to its high intelligence and trainability. Nowadays, the breed is mostly kept as a companion and show dog.

Characteristics

The Standard Poodle is known for its intelligence, trainability, and lively personality. These dogs are super social and get along well with children and other pets, so they make great family pets. Additionally, they're known for their athleticism and love of outdoor activities like hiking and swimming. In general, Standard Poodles are friendly and outgoing, but may be reserved around strangers at first. They're loyal and affectionate companions who love being around people. The Standard Poodle makes a wonderful pet for a variety of households with proper socialisation and training.

Exercise

For Standard Poodles, it's recommended to exercise them 30-60 minutes a day, such as brisk walks, runs, or fetch. Keeping them mentally challenged and entertained with activities such as obedience training, agility courses, or puzzle toys is also a good idea.

Grooming

Since their coats are curly and non-shedding, Standard Poodles require a lot of grooming. Brushing and combing regularly will prevent matting and tangling, and professional grooming every 4 to 6 weeks will keep their distinctive appearance.

Living Environment

As long as they receive enough exercise and mental stimulation, Standard Poodles can thrive in a variety of living conditions, including apartments. Due to their size, they require more space to move around, so you should provide them with regular physical activity, such as daily walks or trips to nearby dog parks. It is also important to train and socialise Standard Poodles to prevent excessive noise in apartment living situations.

Health problems

Standard Poodles can be prone to several health issues that are common among the breed. These include:

• Hip dysplasia: This is a hereditary condition in which the hip joint does not develop properly, leading to joint pain and lameness.
• Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA): This is a degenerative eye disease that can lead to blindness.
• Von Willebrand's disease: This is a bleeding disorder that affects the blood's ability to clot.
• Gastric torsion: Also known as bloat, this is a life-threatening condition in which the stomach twists, trapping gas and cutting off blood supply to the organs.
• Addison's disease: This is a hormonal disorder that affects the adrenal glands, which can lead to weakness, lethargy, and weight loss.
• Sebaceous adenitis: This is a skin disorder that can cause hair loss and scaly skin.
